The Salt Palace & Mountain America Expo Center Announce Global Biorisk Advisory Council Accreditation

The Salt Palace Convention Center and Mountain America Exposition Center recently announced the approval of their Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR facility accreditation. In order to properly address and meet the needs of the continued prevention, response, and recovery of COVID-19, both facilities began to pursue the GBAC STAR facility accreditation program in April of this year. This accreditation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (the leading trade association for the cleaning industry) is another step toward providing a safe facility for all attendees and employees. Equally, if not more, impressive is that Visit Salt Lake is working with 16 additional entities including the airport, major hotels, restaurants, and off-site venues to get them accredited. Salt Lake is striving to be the world’s safest convention destination.

The New SLC Airport Cleared For Takeoff

For nearly 15 years, the Department of Transportation has ranked Salt Lake City International Airport the nation’s #1 on-time airport—even in winter months. Now Salt Lake’s brand new, $4.2 billion airport has opened. It’s a state of the art facility, full of artworks, a mix of local and national food and beverage purveyors, and the world’s largest Delta Sky Lounge.

Not only is it beautiful, but the new airport will be more efficient, safer, and keep Salt Lake cost-competitive—even after the project is complete, SLC will have a significantly lower cost per passenger than other major airports in the United States.

Salt Lake's Committment to Sustainability

Since 2017, the Salt Palace Convention Center has worked with four entities — Visit Salt Lake, A/V provider PSAV, caterer Centerplate and the Mountain America Expo Center — to achieve the Events Industry Council’s Sustainable Events Standard. Salt Palace’s staff can now work with planners to help them certify their events to the same standard. It’s important to Chance Thompson, senior manager, sustainability and public relations at the Salt Palace, to help companies host more sustainable events without too much time and hassle. “Sustainability is not this thing that you just pick up and do,” he says. “So many clients, I’m finding, think about it and they care about it but they’re trying to figure out where to start and what to do. We understand planning a trade show is no easy task. That’s why we’ve set up a system and make it simple for planners.”

Salt Lake’s Convention Hotel to Open Fall of 2022

Construction on the 725-room Hyatt Regency continues on pace to open 24 months from now, in October 2022. It’s being built directly into the Salt Palace Convention Center to provide maximum convenience for our clients. At an estimated cost of $377 million, the project is scheduled to be completed and hosting its first guests on time, offering 60,000-square feet of indoor meeting space, including a 23,138-square foot Regency Ballroom and a 14,682-square foot junior ballroom, as well as 7,400-square feet of outdoor event space. The hotel will have a restaurant on the first floor, a lobby bar, another restaurant and fitness center on the sixth floor, adjacent to an outdoor amenity area that will include a pool and terrace for events and other activities.
