Salt Lake is a thriving, growing modern community, and the Salt Lake City International Airport is the lifeblood of that growth. Bill Wyatt, the Director of Airports, now truly has a monumental task set in front of him: in order to ensure the facility continues to serve a burgeoning population, the airport needs a drastic update. And that’s exactly what he’s giving it: a brand-spanking new, slick, state-of-the art $4 billion facility with considerably more capacity is being built, all while keeping up with the every day traffic of the existing airport.

COVID-19 Meetings & Conventions Updates

Attendee health and safety is a priority to everyone in Salt Lake County. Operations at the airport, hotels and convention center are all in compliance with the health department guidelines. Centerplate to Bring Elevated Hospitality to the Salt Palace and Mountain America Expo Center

Salt Lake County announced the selection of industry leader Centerplate as the exclusive hospitality, catering and culinary partner for the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City and Mountain America Exposition Center in nearby Sandy, following a comprehensive bid process. The multi-year agreement will encompass all food and beverage services for events at both venues, beginning June 28, 2020.

"Centerplate has an established reputation for working with local community partners and meeting planners to create unique and exceptional events. We're excited to welcome their level of expertise as we seek to attract world-class events,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “They will play an important role in helping us create memorable experiences for show clients and generate economic benefits for stakeholders throughout the County and state.”

The New SLC Airport Phase II Plans Advance

"It is a dark cloud indeed that doesn't have a silver lining in it somewhere," Bill Wyatt noted in a recent media interview about the impact COVID-19 is having on SLC Airport. In light of fewer passenger traffic the SLC team has been exploring options to determine the best way to move forward with Phase II of The New SLC Redevelopment Program.

"We won't have to use any part of the old airport after October of this year," Bill said. "We will tear them all down at once." Noting that with fewer passengers the additional gates are no longer needed. "This plan eliminates a lot of the complexity and allows us to save a lot of money," he continued.

The condensed timeline-completion by December 2024, rather than early 2027-will shorten Phase II by two years and is expected to save up to $300 million. Phase II includes building out the east side of Concourse A.

Listings include conventions with attendance of 50 people or more, and major exhibitions and events attracting significant attendance from out of town.
