Visit Salt Lake Encourages Fact-Based Decisions About Travel

In this time of uncertainty and concern regarding the Coronavirus, a.k.a. COVID-19, we understand and appreciate you, our valued clients and your meeting attendees, are asking, “Should I cancel my travel plans to Salt Lake?” According to the World Health Organization, the answer is no.

Visit Salt Lake echoes the ConferenceDirect coalition’s statement on the latest developments regarding Coronavirus. In essence, it states:

"For our industry, the safety of the traveling public, our guests and our employees is of the utmost importance. We feel it’s critical that those in our industry—host destinations such as Salt Lake and meeting/convention professionals and the groups they represent—make calm, rational and fact-based decisions regarding their events. And according to health experts, the overall Coronavirus risk in the U.S. remains low, with at-risk groups being older individuals and those with underlying health conditions."

In addition, Visit Salt Lake encourages you, our trusted and valued meeting professionals, to provide your clients and attendees this informative video produced by the CDC about why travelers shouldn’t cancel their travel plans; to reiterate simple health recommendations for staying safe during the outbreak; and to provide up-to-date informational links to the CDC and WHO regarding the current situation in the U.S.

Finally, here are some Salt Lake facts that are important to consider:

  • NO CORONAVIRUS CASES IN SALT LAKE: As of March 10, there were no confirmed cases of coronavirus cases in Salt Lake County (with just two confirmed cases in the state of Utah).
  • SALT LAKE IS AN INLAND DESTINATION: Unlike coastal states, where the majority of COVID-19 cases are located, Salt Lake is inland and away from the majority of international travelers arriving by air or sea from China and other countries experiencing the highest rate of infected individuals.
  • SALT LAKE CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: Though a major hub for Delta Air Lines, Salt Lake City International does not currently have non-stop service to/from restricted countries.
  • OUTDOOR RECREATION: Salt Lake provides limitless year-round outdoor recreational opportunities, which is an excellent and enjoyable alternative for groups.
  • TRAVEL COSTS:  The supply and demand that drives pricing on hotel rooms, airfare and other travel services favors the traveler right now.
