Spring Has Sprung!

What a difference a year makes! A year ago I was praising our resort partners for the incredible job they did to ensure a quality experience for our out-of-state skiers and snowboarders during a relatively difficult year in terms of snow. Fast forward 12 months and I want to extend another debt of gratitude and offer a “Job well done!” for making the ski and snowboard experience one for the books with the incredible amount of snow Mother Nature graced us with, something not always easy to deal with in regard to avalanche mitigation, snow removal, transportation issues, etc. But note that for those of you wanting to make some more turns, Snowbird is still going strong with a massive 140” base and will be for the foreseeable future.

And with this change of seasons brings wonderful opportunities for locals and visitors alike as an array of events, activities and outdoor locations are and will continue to “spring up” in the next month or so. Think deck parties, alfresco dining, hiking and mountain biking, outdoor concerts, the flourishing fauna of Red Butte Garden, Bees’ games as well Real Salt Lake and Royals’ matches.

I love this time of year as I get to enjoy just about every aspect of our incredible community, and it offers a time to ‘re-charge the batteries’ before we head into the busy summer convention season, one that looks to again be a promising one.

July YOY Hotel Occupancy Forecast

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Visit Salt Lake has developed occupancy forecasting models by using STR Analytics daily hotel data. STR Analytics produces a ‘Daily Trend Report’ (DTR). The DTR is a report of hotels’ daily percentage occupancy, average daily rate, and resulting RevPAR. Visit Salt Lake has purchased a subscription to DTR for Salt Lake in two sets. One for total Salt Lake County (approx. 19,700 rooms), and the other for the Salt Lake County Convention District (“SLCD,” approx. 6,400 rooms). By simple interpolation, we derive the data set for Salt Lake hotels that are located outside the SLCD (approx. 13,300 rooms).

VSL has DTR information from January 1, 2012, to the present. Hotels in the SLCD are located in the downtown area, and 98% of their hotel reservation systems are directly linked to STR Analytics. This enables STR to produce its DTR with a high degree of accuracy and provides reliable insight into the effects of events in Salt Lake. Approximately 80% of the hotels inside Salt Lake County but outside of the SLCD link their reservation systems to STR Analytics. The other hotels participate in surveys conducted by STR.

The graph above shows hotel occupancy forecasts for July 2019. Occupancy forecasts are estimated by the number of convention attendees, day-of-week, seasonality, and location.

There are two graphs for each forecasted month:

  • Hotel occupancy inside the SLCD
  • Hotel occupancy outside the SLCD

The graphs also show historic year-over-year occupancy rates, convention dates, and claimed convention attendance.

Red Butte Concert Series

Red Butte Garden Outdoor Concert Series

The hills are alive with the sound of the Red Butte Garden Concert Series. In an incomparable setting, the Red Butte Concert Series is one of our summer must-do’s. Between top-name acts like Bela Fleck, Seal, Nathaniel Rateliff and more, and the insanely beautiful backdrop of Salt Lake’s Wasatch Range, Red Butte’s Concert Series offers up aural pleasure with a heaping dose of nature. Add the fact that you can bring in your own cooler (yes, that means your favorite red, bubbly, or oat soda, and food) and this concert series is hard to beat.

Log Haven
& Modern West

It’s been quite the year already for Log Haven, one of our long-time Visit Salt Lake members. Not only did they receive another Readers’ Choice for Best Restaurant recognition and was named a Hall of Fame restaurant from Salt Lake Magazine, but they also managed to claim no less than nine Open Table readers’ choice awards. These awards included best overall, scenic view, special occasion, best ambiance, contemporary American, hot spot, best service, romantic and most booked. They are also scheduled to launch this May their third in-house crafted wine. All this exciting news to share in 2019, the year in which they are also celebrating their 20th anniversary!

Another great member, Modern West, is celebrating a big move… literally. They recently expanded their gallery, moving to a larger location in the old Foundry Building on 700 West —a beautiful space that embodies the artistic spirit and complements their new group show of thirty artists, titled “New West.” They celebrated the grand opening of their new space, and their new name, launching this celebrated group show that runs through June 8th.
